Reading a league table: points, goal difference and form guides explained

Every standings table on this site follows the same format: P (played), W (won), D (drawn), L (lost), GD (goal difference) and Pts (points) — three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a loss.
When two clubs finish level on points, goal difference is almost always the first tiebreaker: goals scored minus goals conceded across the whole season. A club that wins 1-0 six times has the same points as one that wins 4-0 six times, but a very different goal difference — which is why big away wins late in a season can matter more than they look.
Some competitions layer on their own extra rules — head-to-head record, goals scored, or (rarely, and only as an absolute last resort) a draw of lots — but goal difference decides the overwhelming majority of ties you'll actually see in a table.
