How the Champions League's league-phase format actually works

The Champions League scrapped its group stage in favour of a single 36-team 'league phase': every club plays eight games against eight different opponents, drawn from stat-based pots so the fixture list stays balanced without a fixed group of four.
After eight rounds, the table is final. The top eight sides advance straight to the Round of 16. Sides ranked 9th through 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining spots in the last 16. Everyone below 24th is out.
From the Round of 16 onward it's a conventional two-legged knockout bracket through to a single-match final at a neutral venue — the format football fans already know from the old competition.
The upshot: more meaningful fixtures earlier in the season, a wider spread of opponents, and a table where goal difference and away form can matter as much as who you're drawn against.
