Five-Game Sunday: Nashville Surge, Four Draws Define Wild MLS Day
· 3 min read
Sunday's slate of five MLS fixtures produced drama from coast to coast, though only one match ended with a clear victor. Nashville SC were the day's standout side, dismantling Austin FC by a commanding 4-1 scoreline at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas. The result represents a significant statement from Nashville and piles pressure on Austin FC, whose home supporters were left with little to cheer.
In Saint Paul, Minnesota United FC and Houston Dynamo FC played out a pulsating 2-2 draw at Allianz Field. Both clubs will feel the sting of dropped points, particularly given how congested the standings remain as the postseason approaches. A share of the spoils does neither side a great deal of good at this stage of the campaign.
Out in Kansas City, Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers served up the afternoon's most entertaining contest, trading goals in a 3-3 thriller at Sporting Park. Six goals and, one imagines, precious little defensive comfort for either coaching staff — though neutral fans had every reason to enjoy the spectacle.
The western matches were similarly inconclusive. Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, while LAFC and Vancouver Whitecaps shared the same result at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Four draws across the day means the playoff race in both conferences remains as congested and nerve-shredding as ever.
Nashville's big win aside, Sunday was defined by parity — a reminder that late in the MLS regular season, every point is fiercely contested and no lead, however small, can be taken for granted.
